When researchers want to understand what happens to gifted children as they grow up, there is one study that stands above almost all others.
The Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth (SMPY) began in the early 1970s under Professor Julian Stanley at Johns Hopkins University. Thousands of highly gifted children were identified through above-level testing and have been followed for more than 50 years, making it one of the longest-running studies of gifted individuals ever conducted.
One of the strongest messages from this research is that gifted children do not simply 'turn out fine' because they are intelligent. Like all children, they benefit when their educational needs are recognised and appropriately supported.
Another important finding challenges the long-held belief that accelerating gifted children academically may harm them socially or emotionally. The evidence instead suggests that students who received appropriate challenge through acceleration, advanced classes or enrichment generally achieved higher levels of educational and professional accomplishment than equally able peers who did not receive these opportunities. Acceleration, however, should always be considered carefully on an individual basis.
The researchers also found that intelligence does not determine a child's future career. Highly gifted participants entered diverse fields including science, medicine, law, engineering, business, writing and the arts. Interests, personality and motivation played an equally important role in shaping their life paths.
Perhaps the most valuable lesson for parents is that intelligence predicts potential, not success. The highest achievers combined their natural ability with perseverance, sustained effort and a genuine passion for learning. Talent still required years of practice and commitment.
Lead researcher David Lubinski has often emphasised that schools should understand how quickly each child learns, identify their strengths and provide learning experiences that match their readiness. While this principle emerged from research on gifted children, it is equally valuable for all learners.
